Success Is Not an Accident
© 2005 Thomas E. Cavanaugh, D.C., MBA

I find it interesting how so many people will look at the success of others and not realize that some effort went into that success. It was not an accident. There are numerous steps that take place along the road to success. Desire, goal setting, planning, execution, determination, follow-up and re-evaluation are key ingredients to accomplishing a task. Besides those steps, there are a few more practical steps that can be part of the process.

Find a Need: When I lived in Washington State, I was planning to consult with doctors of chiropractic who were practicing in the Northwest. As I was in the process of doing a demographic study of eleven states and spoke to several doctors from each one of those states I realized there was a great need. These doctors told me they would like to be able to attend practice building seminars and to join consulting firms, but they found it too time consuming to be away from their offices and too expensive to travel to the different locations.  It becomes a 'Catch 22' for them. They needed the information, but they did not have the time to travel or the funds to pay the expenses. I wanted to fill that need.

Evaluate: I did a cost study analyzing the expense of joining a consulting firm as well as the travel to the different seminar locations. There are many great consulting firms available but I came to the conclusion that they could not fulfill the need of these doctors. If consultants are going to teach a series of at least five plus seminars a year to help doctors build their practice, they can only be in so many cities at a time to do so. Some attempt to teach one specialized subject over one weekend and do so in many cities around the country, but one weekend is certainly not sufficient to help a doctor build his practice.

The Challenge:  The challenges for me became very clear and came in the form of three questions. 1. How can I reach all of the doctors, even those in rural areas? 2. How can I spread myself out thin enough to give them the opportunity to attend seminars closer to home? 3. How can I make attending practice building classes affordable to everyone?

Problem Solving: I did my part by trying to problem solve in a logical format. I couldn't seem to come up with the answer. So, I let the great problem solver that we all have within us do the work. I turned it over to my subconscious mind. One night before I went to sleep I sat on the edge of my bed and spoke to my subconscious mind. I explained the situation and the challenges and just told it I wanted a solution. After going to sleep I was awakened at 4:00 am by a jolt, as if someone was shaking me. As my eyes opened, my mind spoke to me as if I was hearing the words from my ears: "On Line Video Seminar Classes!" That was it!

Selling the Idea: My next step was to find someone that could catch the vision of modern technology and its use to help doctors. I wanted someone who had been in the consulting business for a long time and had plenty of experience. I called upon Dr. Peter G. Fernandez, author of 17 books and developer of the original Practice Starter Program for new doctors.  He has opened more than 3,000 successful practices and been in the consulting business for more than 26 years. Having been a visionary himself it only took a nine-page proposal and he was sold. What I found interesting was that most of his classes were already video taped. He obviously was prompted to do this for something that was going to take place in the future. (The law of attraction at work!)

Research: Now with the idea sold and the concept established it was time to get busy. To work on the project, I moved my family from Washington to Florida. My research led me to many individuals who were experts in their own field. After a few weeks I knew the direction we should go.

The Synergy of Teamwork:  Media people, consultants, webmasters, computer programmers, server specialists, copywriters, web designer, and our own office staff all participated in the project. It was a learning experience for us all, but it was finally accomplished.

The Results: You now have the opportunity to listen to numerous subjects from several different consulting experts. The goal of bringing live taped seminar classes to doctors in rural areas not only extends to places in the United States, but around the world. They have not only been brought to the city where you work, but to your home or office, to be seen anytime at your own convenience. The second part of the goal has also been accomplished.  We have brought seminar classes to you inexpensively. This is just the beginning. There are many more classes in the making and many more on-line programs that will be brought directly to your home or office.

In conclusion, Earl Nightingale stated that success is "The progressive realization of a worthy ideal." This project began with a worthy ideal and the journey of this successful accomplishment will continue on. We will bring you many more classes covering many other subjects to help you become as successful as you desire.

And remember, success is not an accident. It is something in which you create. What can you create in your own practice?
